Word 2003 Styles and Formatting Panel

I really would like to see an option to select all instances of a particular formatting style from the Styles And Formatting panel. An equivalent function is present in MS Word (see attachment).

This option automatically highlights all text in a document with that style.

It has several advantages:
1. If you double click on another style after selecting all instances, this new style will apply to all those instances. This makes it an easy way to quickly restyle a document based on a particular template.

I know you can also do this via the Find and Replace dialog, but a) this dialog doesn't have previews of styles and b) it takes a lot more time for complex documents.

2. It's way easier to find particular instances of a style in a text. Just select this option and page up/down your document.

3. This makes it also faster to check if paragraphs in a large document have the right styles attached. Remember how many paper you spilled by sending large print jobs, only to discover afterwards that you had the wrong styles applied to certain paragraphs. I know I did ;-(

BTW: Word's menu is basically laid out like this:
1. Update %style% to Match Selection
2. Modify...
---
3. Select All %% Instance(s)
4. Clear Formatting of %% Instance(s)
5. Delete %style%

Hi Patric,

I like your idea.
But did you try Find & Replace > Options > Find styles > Select all ?
It's not that direct, but does the same.

Cheers,
Cor

Yes, Edit > Find & Replace > Other Options > Search for paragraph styles > Find All does about the same, but

a) it only works for paragraph styles, you can't search for character or other styles;
b) discovering this option is very hard - calling it "Select All" instead of "Find All" would certainly help though ;-)
c) following this path takes way more time than the one I suggested

P.S. note how Microsoft combines paragraph and character styles in one pane view, distinguishing between the two with the small paragraph and character symbols.

Thanks Patrick for the reply.

@Jay: interesting to add to our wish list, don't you think?

Yes i had seen this feature in MS Word and thought to suggest it also.

@Cor: It has been added to the document. :D

Is there any progress on this issue? I really think it's a huge usability issue that would benefit a lot of users.

Thanks,
Patrick

Why not change the parent style? We inherit to all children (select the Hierarchical view) when you change the font to monospace, for example.
Comment 9 Patrick Smits 2020-11-17 17:54:46 UTC
@Heiko I find this option especially useful when you receive files from third parties that need to be converted to a certain template. You can then copy the formatting and use this feature to adapt the text bit by bit to an existing template.

What makes the feature in Word extra useful is that Word creates new styles on the fly and shows them in the Styles panel, as soon as you introduce a combination that doesn't yet exist. This makes cleaning up text very easy.

I was about to file a duplicate of this bug, but luckily I noticed it.

I would also very much appreciate this feature. In addition to the use cases Patrick mentioned, this is also useful for clearing manual formatting from multiple instances; or clearing character styles which were set on some of the paragraphs; or just for seeing them selected.

I'm mention it would be nice for this to be implemented for all kinds of styles: Paragraphs, character, frame, page etc; but even an implementation for part of the styles would be useful.

I've recently asked for this to be possible with bug 141593.
